fly fishing hawaii:

pics from the week.

this weeks blast from the past features blaine talley and former nwff guide and fellow hawaii bonefish pioneer kevin faucheux...

click here to see blaine's first bonefishing trip with us back in the day.

blaine was one of our early clients. those who took a chance with our little operation out here in the pacific and gave it a try in those early days were often rewarded with some truly epic bonefishing. often they would confess to us later that they thought we were full of sh_t when they booked us. a bit of hawaii bonefishing history for those who care. many of you out there will recognize this spot as "bay street". what you may not know is that back then there was no spot called bay street. we called it "poles". we didn't call it bay street because back then you couldn't get to the flat via the park on bay street, the river channel was too deep to cross. even on a low tide you'd be up to your neck. back in the day, there was a seasonal sand bar that would form way out side that would often hold the big guns as blaine and other clients found out. well over the years currents shifted. the silt filled up the river channel fronting the park. the big fish sand bar has not formed for over ten years at least and is now but a faint memory in old aging minds. of course these days there are a lot more than two broke fishing bums and a few of their clients fishing it. it is still a good spot but not even close to what it was in its pristine unfished days when it was known simply as "poles".  thanks blaine for the walk down memory lane.

that was then.  this is now...

everybody's favorite "tech" fly guy sean checked it with fish he caught with his 990-4 sage method at his new favorite spot. (hah! sorry sean i couldn't resist!)  he gave the 9wt. method the big thumbs up for the windy conditions we've been having lately.

i, on the other hand, have been kind of preoccupied with shall we say "other" things.  i did get out on the flat one afternoon and also fished the lake with matt who is on his "better late than never" spring break.  i fished my sage 690-4 tcr on the flat this past week.  the tcr series was the first of sage's super fast/super smooth action rods.  it is the forefather of the tcx and, most recently, the new method line.  i fish all of these uber fast sage rods and they are all great for those times when you feel the need, the need for speed!

this past week was also the first time i've been back on the lake in months.  i wasn't sure what to expect but you'll never know unless you go right?  we found out that it's fishing okay despite being a bit wet up there.  i fished the sage 490-4 method that day.  we caught some small peacocks and more red devils than we have seen in quite a while.  a great sign for devil lovers like myself.

so as far as we can tell, fishing is rolling on just fine out here in the hi.  just as it should be around this time of the year.  windy? yes it's been pretty yowling out there and they are calling 25mph for the rest of the week, but wind is just a part of fly fishing here.  there are definitely fish out there to be had by those who believe in my mantra of "fearing no wind!"  if that's you... i'll see you on the water.

matt with his first fish in a long long time.

that's about the absolutely "moldiest" devil i've ever seen!

we caught bleugs (bluegill).

some fun size peacocks.

devils, which were pretty scarce this past winter were a welcomed surprise.

and we even kept our lake double streak going. it's pretty long now!

lately i haven't fished all that much.  just enough to get my fill of good times.

clay.
