fly fishing hawaii:

april showers.

blast from the past…

the menpachi (squirrel fish, soldier fish, or "memps" as i like to call them) is a popular food fish among locals here in the islands.  they are nocturnal and hide in caves during the day and come out at night to feed.  memps are pretty hard to find from shore on this island and even tougher to catch with a fly rod.  although the memps will eat flies readily, they tend to hang around really reefy, rocky, rough water type areas that are not very conducive to fly fishing.  there is only one place that i’ve found on this island where you can actually catch these fish on the fly, but it is not easy.  you need supreme line management.  the minute you loose control of your fly line, you’ll lose that eighty dollar line to the rocks.  i’ve lost numerous fly lines chasing this little red fish.  getting to the place i used to fish is a beast as well.  the last time i went there maybe thirteen years ago, i fell, cracked my head open, and ended up spending the night in the emergency room.  needless to say it’s a young man’s game.  these days to me, it’s just another blast from the past.

well it’s been a little rainy and windy around here, still fishing for whatever reason remains good both in the salt and up at the lake.  i took matt up to the lake for one more hit this week before he returns to college and his studies.  despite the high water level the lake fished very well.  there were lots of small peacocks that were great fun on my 4 wt. bamboo rod.  devils are present in good numbers for those, like myself, who are into chasing those things.  we doubled up several times throughout the day which is always a good thing.  i even got my first lake grandslam plus one of 2014.  i got the devil, peacock, largemouth, and a cat to boot.

despite the rain and high water, the lake has been fishing quite well.

salty salts…

in the higher saline content waters, there are bones to be had by those who “fear no wind”.  we went on friday and though there were not a ton of bones around there were enough.  both doug and matt were able to hook a couple.  i managed to hook three but they all, in one way or another, gave me the slip.  sometimes like that.  so you’re just going to have to take my word for it... or not.  it don’t matter.  better yet get out there and find out for yourself... i’ll see you on the water (if you happen to be swinging flies for steelhead in the northwest in the next week or so).

i snaked these photos from matt's facebook page.  to'au (blacktail snapper) and bone.  good thing the boy posts pictures of absolutely everything he catches.

wednesday on the lake…

lots of devils for the devil worshipers out there.

including the "creamsicle" which is a little more rare these days.

and bleugs as well.

on the boat that day i had a sweet little 4wt. bamboo rod with an abel tr1 and a g loomis classic glx 5wt. (the lake slayer) and an abel tr2.  matt had his 4wt. tfo bvk with an abel creek 2 and a 5wt. tfo pro with a scientific anglers concept reel.  all great set ups for the lake and all rods got bit multiple times… now that’s a good day.

we took a break from fly fishing and bait fished for a while just for shits and grins.  we caught a bunch of fish that way too.  good fun...

matt's old school fiberglass ultralight spinner did some damage with bait.  cat's were out on the prowl on this day.

a rather odd lake bait double, channel cat and the rare meat eating tilapia.

"if you've got love in your sights, watch out, love bites."  ouch!

matt doing his best "clay" impersonation.

the real deal.

the bass-tard to complete the lake grand slam.

and the cat on the fly to make the slam "plus one".

well i'm outies!  i'll be doing some tough, probably non productive, steelheading and bumming around the northwest for the next couple of weeks.  i'll try posting stuff from up there if i can.  until the next time, get out there and fish, hold down the fort here on the island, and as always, enjoy the good times.

clay.
