fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

another week in the life and the redington dually.

another week in the life of a fishing bum is in the books and gone forever.  deano checked in with some bones he caught this week.  deano, like me, is all about catching bones with shall we say “non traditional” bonefish fly gear.  lately he has been using the echo gecko rod in his bonefish pusuits.  the echo gecko is designed as a kids rod to help ease the next gen into the great sport of fly fishing.  the echo gecko is a 7’ 9” 4/5 wt. rod.  the colorful foam forgrip and fighting butt are much smaller in diameter to fit kids hands.  as it turns out the grip diameter also fits many asian hands quite nicely as well.  the rod is a bright yellow color and although it may look like a toy, deano says the rod casts very nicely.  that was enough for me and i got one as well and i think he is right.  i haven’t had time to take it out for a spin yet but stay tuned.

deano with his echo gecko and speyco single spey trout reel (speyco reels are his favorite reels).

looks like fun deano... i can't wait to get my "gecko" wet.

craig is in bc and sent this pic of a bc steely he got.  he also said he got a big hen on the first day of his trip on his first cast... can’t beat that.

bc steely... nice.

speaking of steelies, i spent this week with one of my steelhead buds from oregon thuy and her daughter elise.  mostly hanging out and eating, but we did get out to the lake one day along with my nephew bennet.  we caught a bunch of peacock bass as well as a couple of cats with spinning rods and bait.  unfortunately, i forgot to put the memory card back in my camera so i was only able to take a few pics before the camera memory was full.  the weather was great and we sll had a blast.

thuy and me.  at least the back of thuy and me.

bennet got on the fish first and got on the only pics before the camera ran out of memory.

this week i also tagged along with doug and masa for some spin fishing for trevally...

we all caught quite a lot of trevally (the summer bite was on) but doug got the big one of the day.  this six pound omilu (bluefin trevally).

before i knew it the week was almost up and i realized that i hadn’t fly fished at all.  that ain't right.  so yesterday (after having lunch with thuy, elise, and doug)  i dragged my fat tryptophan filled ass out on the water.  i tried out the redington dually 7113-4 switch rod that our rep sent to us to check out (thanks jamie).

the dually is a new line of switch and spey rods recently introduced by redington.  it is a part of the 2014 sage and redington line up.  coming in at a price point just under 250 bucks this series of two handed rods are perfect for those wanting to get in on the two handed fun without dropping bags of cash.  the rods are a matte satin finished maroon color (very nice) and have a cork reel seat insert (also very nice).  guide wraps and finishes are very high quality... it is just a really nice looking rod.  of course looks can be deceiving and the proof is in performance.

i lined the rod with a beulah elixir switch 400gr. line which worked out just fine although i think another fifty or so grains would not have hurt the cause at all.  the rod did everything i asked of it well and handled the half dozen or so micros and rats i hooked with it well.  control without overpowering.  that's what i look for in a rod at least for fighting fish.  i took a few single hand casts with the rod and it casted well though i don’t like to cast any switch rod single handed.  switch rods in general can bomb lines out single hand, but to me they all feel heavy and clunky when cast this way.  i also cast the rod overhead with two hands (also something that i rarely do).  the dually performed well at that too.  overall the redington dually is a solid rod that doesn't appear to have cut any corners in design or construction.  at 250 bucks, no one should be left out of the wonderful world of spey or two handed fly casting.  what we around here know simply as bombing the two hander.  i'll see you on the water.

the redington dually should keep everyone in the the two handed game.  no matter if that game is swinging flies for steelhead or a hawaiian style bombarama.

no big boys on this day (sometimes like that), but micros and rats will put a bend in the long rod and are always welcome.

another week in the life is lost and gone forever.  fortunately a new week is upon us full of potential, possibilities, and, of course, good times.

clay.
