fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

lake check.

went up to check out the lake with matt this past week.  i had been wanting to check it out for a while but never got the chance.  winter is not exactly the best time to fish the lake. rainy weather and cooler temperatures can shut it down pretty good.  i wasn’t expecting much on this outing but poor fishing has never kept me off the water.  as i said before, i always fish where i want to the way i want to and just play the hand i’m dealt.

i brought along a few “toys” to keep me entertained through the many fishless hours that i could potentially face.  i brought along my sweet little 4wt. bamboo rod and abel tr1 and my 5wt. g loomis glx classic with an abel creek 2 reel (lake standards).  i also took out my new baitcasting rod.  i got this new rod to replace the one that the power window on my car ate on my last trip to the lake.  matt was bringing bait so i also took a spinning rod.  since it is now officially winter, i brought a 33” ice fishing rod for baiting duties.  i have never ice fished before but from what i’ve seen it looks like fun.  it is on my fishing bucket list for sure.  matt fished his 5wt tfo professional and abel creek 2 reel.  he baited with an old school daiwa fiberglass ultra light rod.

we got out on the lake and quickly found that there were quite a few small peacocks still around.  nothing over a pound but they provided plenty of fun for the bamboo fly rod and ultra light spinners throughout the day.

quite a few little tucs around.

devils were extremely slim pickin's for red devils but we did find a few here and there to sight fish.

we fly fished for a while, then baited a little bit, then went back to fly fishing.  for the most part the weather held up.  we got full on bomb rained on a couple of times (surprise surprise) but it wasn't that bad.  i had already caught fish on both of my fly rods as well as the ice fishing rod, so i began chucking the baitcaster because, as i always say, it’s not a good day on the lake until all rods get bit.  wouldn’t you know it, a few casts in and a nice largemouth jumped on my lure getting the stink off the new rod, getting all rods in the boat bit, and completing my lake grand slam for the day (tuc, devil, largemouth) all in one bucket mouth gill flare.  soon after matt completed his slam with a largemouth on both his fly rod and with bait.

basstards...

so the official report is that the peacocks were small and the red devils scarce.  the bite was okay but pretty sporadic and a far cry from the gangbuster bites of summer.  the bass were cool and always welcomed to tug on my line though not my favorite fish to catch.  it is fun to go full on ish monroe bassmasters style and fish a baitcaster every once in a while.  compared to countless other "shut down" winter days i’ve spent on the lake, i’d say the lady of the lake smiled on us... or at least gave us a little smirk to welcome us back.  i’ll see you on the water.

"that gold fly you tie"  i first tied this fly a while back for the gold kastmaster hatch that occurs now and then on the lake.  i fished it with stan wright one day and the rest is lake wilson history.  matt conked a bunch of peacocks with it on thursday.

"tfo professional 5wt., abel creek 2, and "that gold fly you tie"  matt's secret to success.

my "microfische" fly is also a good one especially when the fish are deeper.

very ambitious little guy.

ice fishing hawaiian style (without the ice).

there were a few devils for the bamboo and hard core deviler.

classic glx and classic moldy devil.

more peacocks on the fly.

matt's bass.  the boy looks pretty happy.

stink off the rod, all rods bit, lake grand slam... lets go home!  good times.

clay.
