bonefishing hawaii:

april showers bring may... showers?

first of all thanks to kevin mulkern for the cool underwater photo of his latest bonefish conquest.  as for the fishing around here in the words of mc coy from star trek and later the information society, “it’s worked so far, but were not out yet”.  the weather remains a fickle beast around here.  sunny but rainy, but then sunny again.  what’s a boy in love supposed to do?  i’ve been out a few times since the last blog and experienced the full gamut of what one is likely to face on our waters on any given day.  i fished a picture perfect day out at ke’ehi with jay then spent three days on the water with my good buddy ted from no cal.  ted was the shop’s and my first client a good eight year or so ago.  since then we’ve been through many adventures in our bonefish waters and he has seen it all.  he still pops in every once in a while when he gets the itch and it’s always good to spend time on the water catching up with him.  anyway, we got pounded by rain the first day, had a nice day the next then experienced the  front day on the third day.  we played the hand we were dealt, fished it hard and, as is always the case with me, had fun where we belong...  in the water.

on monday, sean showed up with lost brian and some mantis they had caught for an article sean is writing for the next lawaia magazine.  unfortunately the shop, and a good part of waialae, lost power due to yet another storm.  we made the best of it and grinded some sweet mantis in the dark.  the bones are definitely ready to pop (as can be seen on the days in between storms) it’s a simple matter of the weather stabilizing a bit.  until that happens, what you will face on any given day at any spot is anyone’s guess.

one of hawaii's "heavy hitters" if there is a bonefish to be caught jay will hunt it down and catch it.  he caught four on this day.  pretty slow for him.

didn't i see this guy on some kind of t.v. fishing show?  don't worry ted, doug, the thunder stealer, steals it from us all.

we fished hard and teds patience and persistance paid off.  'til the next time ted...

"lost" brian with his "day saver" a shallow water cuda.  hey brian don't be so lost!  let's go fish bro.

the blackout, the boyz, and the mantis shrimp.

there are perks to having a fly shop behind a chinese restaurant... despite the blackout the dudes at the hung won powered through to provide us with some salt and pepper mantis.

eating mantis in the dark.  a first for me.  but if bones can feed at night...

grasshopper, to catch the bonefish you must first be the bonefish.  clay "being" the bonefish (i like da head).

that's it for now... how's the fishing?  everyday is different and you just gotta get out there and find out.  all i can say for sure is that the ocean is still chock full of good times.

clay.
