fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

the hawaiian staycation.

so e.t. rolled into the shop with this great idea.  we were all going to take a little hawaiian fishing staycation.  a sort of break from guiding and work to do some "fun" fishing that we have been planning for quite a long time and never got around to doing.  so we laid out an itinerary that included a day of bottom fishing and a day of chasing weke with five weight fly rods.  the third day we had to go back to ke’ehi to fish with a friend of ed’s brother (just normal bonefish stuff), and the forth day we spent chasing micro bones (small bonefish between 6 and 12 inches.  sometimes you gotta do different things to break up the monotony of the limited fly fishing opportunities here on the island as well as explore new fun possibilities.

the good part of this whole scheme was that the time on the water with the boyz was really fun.  the down side was that as most “big plans” seem to always turn out, the fishing was super tough, except for the bonefish parts of the staycation which we already know all to well and was actually what we were trying to get away from.  we caught a few good bottomfish but it was nothing to write home about and weke hunting turned out to be a total bust (but you never know unless you go and the bentos were super good!).  i guess from a blog standpoint, i can say that yes there are still a bunch of bonefish out there now for all those who are interested.  we all caught bones the day we went to ke’ehi as well as bottom fishing and micros on the last day.  i took very few pictures because hey i was on vacation.  i also haven’t been answering my cell phone for the same reason so i apologize to those who may have called.  my theory with cell phones is that if its important, they’ll leave a message.  otherwise as they say, five nine nine... neva mind!  it was a relaxing break from the ssdd (same sh_t different day) and it was so much fun that e.t. is already planning the next one.  maybe next time the fishing will be better and i’ll take more pictures... maybe.

the day we went bottom fishing we caught some sharp jaw bonefish, a few moanos (many bar goatfish), a couple omilus (bluefin trevally),  and a few nabetas (peacock wrasse, doug caught a huge one).  when i just downloaded (uploaded???) the pictures from my camera, all i had was this humu (humuhumunukunukuapua'a, trigger fish).  we caught a ton of them.

after a day of weke ala alas (no wekes) craig joined us for some micro bones.  this was the only photo i took of this somewhat camera shy bonefish and the sage 1195-4 tcx.

fortunately craig was with us or it may have been blog ala alas.  i think i need a full time camera man... maybe the shop will pay for one.  anyway i caught about a half dozen little micro bones.  hawaiian trout, lots of fun on the 5wt. tcx switch.

that's it for now.  if you're wondering what that thing on my head is in the title pic, let me just say this.  it didn't work the first time, but hawaiian ice fishing is in the works. what else would you expect from the guy who brought you such hits as fly fishing for bonefish in hawaii... good times.
