bonefishing hawaii:

kaka'ako kool.

so a few weeks ago i was doing my normal ebay perusing, looking for more “junk” to buy, when i came accross a scientific anglers system 7 reel.  this one was from back in the day when the scientific anglers system line of reels were made by hardy bros. in england.  they were basically the hardy marquis reel with the scientific angler system name on it.  both these scientific angler system reels and the hardy marquis are still pretty common on the second hand market.  the sa ones go for slightly less than the marquis (i guess just because of the name on it).  i have both the marquis and the sa system reels and as far as functionality goes, they both work great.  hardy still produces the larger salmon sizes of these reels, though they are now manufactured in korea.

i see these reels on ebay all the time but what caught my eye about this particular system 7 was that the location of the item was listed as honolulu, hawaii.  what?!?  now i know that there is some old fly gear hiding out in garages around the island but from what i’ve seen come through the shop over the years, old gear with any useful value is pretty rare.  it peaked my interest.  i decided to try to get it.  it looked in good shape and was a size i could use and was also kind of looking for.  if nothing else, it was worth it just to see who and where this thing came from.

i bid on it and actually won it.  i made arrangements with a girl named jana to pick up the reel from a place called kaka’ako kool.  those who know me know that i’m not much of a social land creature so i had no idea what kaka’ako kool was.  jana gave me good directions and i googled the joint and found out it was like a shave ice place right on queen street.

kaka'ako kool... pretty cool.

kaka’ako kool is an interesting place.  they sell shave ice, other food and snacks, and the place is filled with old and collectable toys.  jana is the manager of kaka’ako kool and a super nice girl.  i got the reel which was in really good condition and we chatted for a bit.  i found out that the owner is quite a collector and is constantly buying stuff for, and selling stuff from, his collection.  sounds like someone i know, well at least the buying part.  since i was there, i also got a shave ice (vanilla with ice cream and a snow cap) that came in a cool plastic flower cup thing.  i’m not a big shave ice eater but the shave ice was pretty damn awesome.  if you want some good shave ice or are into old toys from back in the day, jana at kaka’ako kool is a definite check out.

vanilla shave ice with ice cream and a snow cap.  awesome.

i finally got around to cleaning up the reel and getting it ready to get back action.  wednesday rolled around and it was time for it’s debut.  i spooled the scientific angler system 7 reel with cortland 444 classic line and hung it on my g loomis classics glx 6wt.  yeah, that’s a lot of “classic”.  it was a perfect combination and very period coordinated.  i like that.

we got out on the water and, as has been the case for me lately, i had a pretty tough time out there.  the setup i was using was excellent.  every time i fish a classic glx, it reminds me of how absolutely ridiculously good casting this rod is.  there are lots of great rods out there but, to me, this is still the all time best.  there were quite a bit of fish around, i just couldn’t get any of them to bite.  i pulled out just about every trick in that twenty year old giant santa clause bag of tricks i haul out every time with me on the water.  no dice.  i was beginning to think that the reel, although sweet, was lacking in the juj department.  hours went by and all i got was the middle finger (or fin) from every single bone i cast to... sometimes like that.

finally at the zero hour i hooked one.  it, of course, ran and popped off.  right then i knew that it was over.  though the fat lady hadn’t peeped a note yet, i could tell she was definitely warming up.  i was done, but my system 7 reel was still in the fight.  in the face of defeat it summoned up every last bit of juj it had and hooked me a little day saver micro bone... and then another.  these were tiny fish, under a pound, but it is on this size of fish that the six weight shines.  these tiny bones were just as much fun to catch as any ten pounder that i  have caught before.  my latest addition to the team, the scientific anglers system 7 reel, officially began a new chapter in its life.  welcome to the family.  i’ll see you on the water.

fun little bones often save the day on hard fished waters.

doug knows all about that!

hey jana, thanks for the sweet reel!  i'll be back to kaka'ako kool soon for some wicked shave ice and good times.
