fly fishing hawaii:

bombing pics.

lost brian checked in with an unusual catch on the fly.  he caught what we call an omaka or yellow tail scad.  i remember i used to fish for them at “L” dock in pearl harbor many years ago using nehu (hawaiian anchovy) for bait.  as the nehu became more scarce, so did the omaka.  today there is still some that can be caught in kbay and probably pearl harbor too.  like so many other native fish species, though, the omaka fishery is a shell of what it once was.  lost brian’s fish is the first i have heard of being caught on a fly in these waters and yet another example showing that when you bomb, you never know what is going to give you the next pull.

"lost" brian and omaka... sweet.

as for me, all sight fishing and no bombing makes me a bit antsy so i went out the day after i fished with e.t. (wednesday i think) for a little solo bombarama session.  i had just talked to my spey casting mentor harold and was jacked to get out and try some of the things he suggested to improve my two handed casting.  i  used my sage 6126-4 one rod, abel spey reel, and a 385gr. rio steelhead scandi head.  the tweaks my buddy harold suggested worked like magic and i had a great casting day.  to me, there is nothing quite like seeing continual improvement in casting.  after all it is the fly cast, more than any other aspect of fly fishing, that got me into this sport in the first place and it is the life long quest for the ultimate cast that keeps me going out there... oh yeah and hooking fish is pretty okay too.

on the fishing side, i guess it was good.  no omaka for clay but i did hook a half dozen or so bones, though they were all of the  micro to small rat size.  not exactly the giant bones of hawaii that i keep hearing about, but they were bitey and seemed to be all over the place.  super fun on  a six weight spey rod.  i'll take that any day and that’s all i have to say about that.  enjoy the “super” moon and i’ll see you on the water.

micros, small rats...

and good times.
