bonefishing hawaii:

what is this, some kind of bonefish fly fishing place?

there has been known to be some fly fishing for bonefish going on around here from time to time.  sean checked in with his latest kbay fatty and his opine on the new g. loomis nrx rod.  i went out to ke’ehi on wednesday despite the weather forecast.  as promised in the 09/16 blog, i also got sean to post tying instructions to his “secret fly” on the hawaii fly page.  check out the “fuzzy hand”, it may just be the ticket to your next big hawaii bone too.

according to sean his day off went a little like this...

"I took the new G. Loomis NRX out for a test drive today in the bay. The NRX is a user friendly rod, and it is easier to load than most of the other new saltwater sticks on the market. You won't need as much "getting to know you" time as you might with some competitor's rods. It is stiff in the lower half, yet loads in close easily, which is critical when sight fishing sneaky bones. The model I used was the 9wt, which I feel is a little heavy for the light winds l had, but with a long leader I could still make it work.

I knew the day would be alright once I saw three little birds and remembered something Bob once said.

The first fish I hooked was a rat. It was feisty, but never hit the backing. The NRX whupped it in seconds.

A little later, I hooked into a piggy. I finally got to see the pretty blue PowerPro Hollow Ace backing I recently put on my reel. Even this bigger fish didn't stand a chance against the NRX.

I had a little trouble with my camera timer this time, and aimed it a little high, but you get the point.

A minute later I got a clean release and went home to watch MNF.

Clay has asked me to tell you folks about the fly I've been using lately. As much as it pains me to give away my dirty secrets, here it is."

two days later...

i went out to ke’ehi and got into some good sight fishing with my beulah switch 6/7.  the weather called for serious clouds and rain so although i wanted to sight fish (yes, i have been known to sight fish too), the thought of maybe having to bomb with a single hand rod made me decide to take the short (10’6”) switch out again.  turned out that the cloud cover was the kind that blocks much of the glare on the water making it possible to sight fish despite the inclement weather.  i hooked a bunch of fish on both an orange and a tan/gold charlie.  the fish were in skinny (good thing otherwise i don’t think i would have been able to spot them) and the 10’ 6” switch with a sixteen or so foot leader made decent presentations to the skittish fish.  i wasn’t really expecting much out of this particular day with the weather and the winds from the south and all, but if i’ve said it once, i’ve said it a thousand times, you’ll never know, unless you go and i ended up hooking more bones sight fishing on this day than i have any other day this whole summer.  i guess that’s bonefishing in hawaii, sometimes you catch, sometimes you don’t, and sometimes like that.

one shallow bone.
