fly fishing hawaii:

who are the people in your neighborhood?

well another january is in the books and gone forever.  i would give january 2013 a grade of b-/c+.  overall not as good as the past several january’s on record.  it did have it’s moments of greatness, but old man winter also show up more than he has in quite a while.  the week before this past week i spent a couple cold front pounding rain days on the water.  one day we got so soaked and cold that we bailed after only an hour or so and it takes a lot to get us to flinch.

this past week i got out on the water and things felt right again.  sunny skies and trades, just like island bones (and island boys) like it.  the trades were a bit on the stiff side (borderline howlin’ like a shaolin) but i’ll take that over light variable winds any day.  it is still kinda cold out there.  the tides i got out on weren’t the best and the reef i fished was an unforgiving beast.  the return of the trades, however, made me and the “people of the neighborhood” comfortable again.  i bombed my way into a number of different fish (variety is one of the nice things about the bombarama).  i caught the largest flying gurnard i’ve ever caught, some flag tail weke (goat fish), an unfriendly trevally that gave me dirty lickings, a couple of large aha (bluebone needle fish) that put on a spectacular aerial show before finally coming unbuttoned (man i thought i had those guys), and of course our old friend (and for some reason everyone’s favorite) mr. bone.  not a bad way to cap off january 2013.

today “they” are calling for variables (again).  although the trades should be back this coming week, we are not quite out of the “winter” woods yet so just be prepared to play the hand you’re dealt and you’ll be okay out there.  right now i gotta go lie on my ass, oink, and watch the super bowl... i’ll see you on the water.

that reminds me of a song... (click here if you don't already know what i am talking about)

the flying gurnard is a person in your neighborhood...

in your neighborhood, in your neighborhood.

and the goat is a person in your neighborhood...

in your neighborhood...

in your neighborhood.

and the bonefish is a person in your neighborhood...

they're the people that you meet, when you're walking on the reef.  they're the people that you meet each day... good times.
