fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

may flowers.

phew!  wow what a start to may!  if this past week is an indication of things to come, we are in for one wild ride my friends.  i fished a lot this past week, four days in a row to be exact.  that is a lot for me.   i fished two days for bones with doug and our buddy j rod from alaska on tuesday and wednesday.  on thursday, doug and i snuck out for a little afternoon "sinful" spin fishing session for papio (trevally) and barracuda.  i capped off the four day bender up in wahiawa out on the lake with dean.

i tallied up the damage before writing this and came up with this total:

1 'aha (needle fish)

15 bones

5 cuda (barracuda or kaku)

1 trumpet (trumpet fish or nunu)

4 'omilu (bluefin trevally)

2 pa’opa’o (golden trevally)

2 peacocks

1 pualu (surgeon fish)

14 red devils

6 whiteys (trevally)

1 'ulae (lizard fish)

a total of 52 fish of eleven different species.  that’s only counting the fish that we caught when i was there.  e.t. and j rod went out on their own on wednesday morning (i think they caught ten papios, three awa'aua (ladyfish) and a couple more bones.  doug and j rod went out again on saturday (after i had cried no mas!) and caught a total of six more bones.  the point of all of this should be clear.  as we here at nwff say "biting up!"  the waters around oahu (fresh and salt) appear to be gearing up, hopefully,  for an epic summer.  at least by oahu standards.  no matter what floats your boat, now may be a pretty good time to get out there and get after it.  after i recover for a bit... i’ll see you on the water.

doug kicked things off with this pa'opa'o (golden trevally).  his first one on a fly ever and, in true doug fashion, he sight fished it.

then, of course, there were bones.

as usual, the bone crazed maniac (doug) accounted for most of the bones but j rod and i got our licks in as well.

i went ultra light and sight fished with my sage 691-4 one, abel classic reel, and a scientific anglers textured saltwater 6 wt. line.  it worked well although with a six weight i had to “finesse” my way to landing these guys.

j rod caught the most species.  in addition to this 'aha (needlefish) he also caught the lizard, trumpet, another pa’opa’o, an 'omilu, and a pualu (on the fly!)
