bonefishing hawaii:

gusty!

phew! wind-mar! this past week was windy with a capital wind.  for most of the week it was beyond howlin’ like a shaolin levels.  so what does clay do in these situations?  he decides it’s time to fish his 7wt. fiberglass rod.  like i’ve said before, my fishing outings always begin with deciding what gear i feel like fishing.  on that day it happened to be my 8’ 6” 7wt. lamiglass fiberglass, abel switch reel, and 7wt. sci anglers mastery bonefish line.  conditions be damned.  after all fish gotta eat and fishermen gotta fish.

from the moment i got out on the water until the time i left it was blowing big.  fifteen to twenty five nonstop with gusts that were maybe upwards of forty.  i like a nice fifteen mph. tradewind as much as the next bone but when it is fifteen when the wind backs off it can make for some serious beat down.  the wind was so strong i couldn’t even cast down wind because it was impossible to throw a backcast.  even the d loop for a roll cast downwind would just be blown in front of the rod (a reverse d of sorts).  the only way i could cast effectively was perpendicular to the wind and slightly upwind.  madness!

visibility was quite good and we saw some bones doing their thang.  making good fly presentations was another story.  most bones that i have run into throughout my long journey are uninterested in flies that move around like a steelhead fly swung through a class three rapid.  i dug the heaviest fly i had out of my box.  it wasn’t nearly as heavy as i would have liked (maybe about two pounds would have been good)  but it was all i had.  with that, a few circus tricks and a lot of rod juj (my lamiglass has good juj), i was somehow able to present my fly well enough to get a few bones to put it in their mouths.

later in the week the wind dropped down to just ridiculous levels and it is still blowing pretty stiff as i am writing this.  will it ever stop?  yo i don’t know.  turn off the lights and i’ll glow.  to the extreme i rock a mic like a vandal.  light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle.

and that, my friends is all i have to say about that.  i’ll see you blowing vanilla ice on the water.

bent glass...

so sweet.

the sea was very angry and murked up the water a bit.  yes that is wind generated waves on the flat.

but the glass has got juj.

parabolic bend.

jacket up!  big winds, glass rods, and, as always, good times.

clay.
