bonefishing hawaii:

this weeks fish pics.

blast from the past...

thought i’d start things off with another blast from the past.  early nineties clay fly fishing for rockfish.  yaquina bay oregon.  scientific anglers system two 7/8 reel, st. croix pro 8wt., fast sinking shooting head, candlefish flies.

a couple of check-ins from the nwff crew:

deano got this nice boney this week on his james reid trout spey rod.

sometimes you gotta see the forest for the flats.

"lost" brian got the stink off of his new gear this week. a sage 691-4 method and abel classic reel. does that set up sound familiar?

brian calls the sage 691-4 method and abel classic combo the imperial guard.  i love it!

the weather’s been very summer like lately and it’s no surprise that with these conditions the bonefishing is firing island wide.  i actually didn’t fish at all this week.  i did, however, spend three days on the water guiding with nwff guide ed tamai.  ed and i guided nervous water's long time client ted.  ted was the first angler kevin and i guided out here on oahu way back in 2001.  his first time out with us was one of the most epic days out here that i have ever seen.  ted often reminds us of how he went out with us that day thinking we were full of sh_t and went home with a sore arm from fighting fish.  there were big bones everywhere that day.  ted hooked and landed over ten fish all in the seven to ten plus pound range.  of course this was back when no one was really fly fishing out here except us.  since then ted has returned countless times.  over the last thirteen years, he has seen the best and the worst that our hawaiian fly fishery has to offer.  this past week he once again brought the juj he had the first time he fished with us and we had three epic days on the water.  in three days ted hooked choke bones and landed a bunch of them.  i lost count of how many we got.  that's pretty rare in this steelhead like fishery.  then, to top it all off, on his last day he even hooked and landed a pa’opa’o (golden trevally).  the “golden” is a hawaiian flats prize that even many local fly fishers have not yet had an encounter with.  i can count the number of them that i have caught with a fly rod on my fingers.  the gods obviously felt that ted has paid his dues over the years.  you can be sure he won’t soon forget this trip for sure.  i’ll see you on the water.

ted hooked up under a bluebird hawaiian sky.

e.t. gives his "shaka" of approval.

that was the beginning of the three day bonefest.  ted hooked up again.

there were many more where that came from.

very ambitious little omilu (bluefin trevally).

some guys have all the luck and some guys have all the skill. put those guys together and look out!

'ulae... the lizard!

and what would an epic bonefishing trip to hawaii be with out a pa'opa'o (golden trevally) to make the whole thing absolutely over the top and almost unbelievable!  ed and i couldn't believe it.

"deck hand" clay about to release yet another of ted's bones.  i was fortunate to be a part of the epic three day carnage.  it's good to see that these kinds of days still exist in our little fishery and aren't a thing of the past just yet.  sometimes you don’t even need to actually fish to enjoy good times.

clay.
