bonefishing hawaii:

in between fronts.

lately we’ve been hit by a couple of cold fronts out of the west.  last weekend the cold front brought a bunch of rain to the islands.  this weeks front rolled in on friday and doesn’t seem to have the rain but the air is pretty chill.  i fished a little while this past wednesday in between the two fronts.  i had a little itch to try and reach out and touch something so i took out the 13’ 6/7 tfo deer creek spey rod and abel spey reel.  the tide was really low in the middle of the day having just come off of a new moon on monday.  it was negative when i got out on the flat so i spent a few hours just looking around the hood and saying hey to some of the low tide creatures.  as ferris beuller once said, “life moves pretty fast. if you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.”  words to live by in life and fishing.

when the tide finally rolled in it came with a vengeance and despite my fooling around, i did get in a good hour and a half or so of bombing.  the whole scene that day felt a bit dead, wintery, and not very fishy.  there were remnants of the last front still lingering in the air and perhaps some stirring of the new front approaching.  needless to say, i didn’t have that loving feeling.  still, i played the hand i was dealt and pounded hard.  in the end i got a few bones and a dumpster full of trumpets (good to see those guys doing well and prospering).  doug fished a different spot but ended up with about the same story to tell as me.  nothing special.  just another average so so day.  but that’s all good with me because you only go around once and you only get so many days (average or otherwise)... so i’ll take it.  hopefully this weekends cold front is the last for a while and we can get on with the business of spring.  i’ll see you on the water.

everyones favorite flats pal... puff daddy.

snowflake.

small bone... big tail.  the big tail is what gives bones it's speed.  it also makes everyone think that every "tailing" bonefish is big.

i fished the trumpet section...

while doug was at another place doing his thang.

another bone ready for release back into a dark and quickly rising sea.

some days are better than others.  some days are warmer or colder than others.  sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains... think about that.  good times.
