fly fishing hawaii:

more stuffs.

since the last time, the weather around here has been nothing short of spectacular.  it is shaping up to be one pretty fine summer by hawaii standards.  the great weather we’ve been experiencing has somewhat re-ignited a little sight fishing flame in me.  i spent the better part of this past week poking around shallower waters with eyes open (at least partially open).  early in the week, i fished the beulah classic switch 5/6 with a 300gr elixir scandi line.  later i used the sage 691-4 one with a 6wt. scientific anglers textured saltwater line.  this was the first time i used both the sage rod and sa textured line.  both performed outstandingly and together make a sweet little sight fishing combination.  lots of bonefish around this past week but they were a little tough to make eat (at least for me).  i ran into a lot of “very little to no interest fish”.  lots of half hearted follows and short bites (nips as we call it), but plenty of shots to keep things interesting all day.  with a lot of persistence (and wading), a “bag of tricks” slung over my shoulder, and some dumb luck, i did get fish up to five pounds that were right in the wheel house of the sage 691-4 one.  the rod handled them well.  the sa textured line is another winner from the folks that brought us the mastery bonefish line (in my opinion the best bonefish line ever).

trevally are still just starting to crank up.  reports of sightings and catching of this elusive hawaiian fly rod fish are slowly starting to trickle in.  i’m still looking for my first summer trevally action.  so far all i have to report is a face to face encounter with about a ten pound whitey that cruised up to about a rod length away from me and doug before taking off.  it was pretty cool and hopefully a sign of things to come.  stay tuned.

here's more pics from our little recent kauai trip as seen through the eyes of mike boyd of dro.

this past week on oahu...

sean and nankos mike have been on the hunt for trevally at k bay.  this past week mike got this awa'aua (ladyfish) with seans 'iao (silverside) imitation.  nice fly... nice fish.

i started off the week showing keanni the finer points of tying a woolly bugger.  then it was off to do some fishin'.

doug doin' what he does.  i walked around with him a couple days this past week.  this guy can spot fish something fierce.

miraculously, this guy also gets thrown a "bone" now and again as well.  will wonders never cease?

sage 691-4 one and sa mastery textured saltwater line...

ready for summer 2012.

the weather's great, the water's warm, and the fish are waiting.  the nwff crew and i will be out there a lot in the coming months, "just having fun".  shouldn't you be too?  good times.
