fly fishing hawaii:

not much.

didn’t really fish a whole lot this past week.  the week can be summed up by big waves, big tides, and big winds.  the wind and waves i don’t mind but i don’t like the big tides all that much for bones though i know a lot folks out there like it.  just a personal preference.  i spent some time working on some “yet to be discovered” saltwater targets that i haven’t quite dialed in just yet.  it still needs a lot of time and work.  there is still a ton of fly fishing opportunities in our hawaiian waters aside from the now “known” bonefish fishery.  unfortunately there are not a lot of fly fishers willing to spend the time it takes to go figure them out or see if they actually can be done consistently.  it is much easier to “figure it out” when there is already a bunch of people doing it.  i think it is a confidence thing.  also you gotta love to fish rather than “catch” to figure out new things that haven’t been done before.  fortunately i love to fish and explore.  unfortunately, unsuccessful exploration of new targets, new places, and techniques do not make for good blog material.

i did get out for a big tide bone quickie with e.t. on friday (i think it was) to try to get a fish for the ole blog.  there were some fish around but not a ton and the tide, as advertised, raged in quick.  we managed to get a few to eat before helm's deep descended on the flat.  overall it seems that we have settled into pretty normal summer fishing.  there should be bones around at most spots on most days for all to enjoy.  the south swell so far has been nothing short of epic.  the best that i can recall in years.  kind of makes me want to come out of retirement and catch a few waves.  i wouldn’t hold my breath, but if i do, you’ll be the first to hear about it.  we'll see.  until then,  i’ll stick to poking around with my fly rod (in places i should and should not be poking) and i’ll see you on the water.

the bay boyz checked in with the fruits of their labors using sage bass rods and streamers.

i told you, not much this week but still, as always, good times.
