bonefishing hawaii:

bones away.

it must be getting close to christmas.  i’ve been seeing a lot of santas and lights and stuff around.  also as i am writing this the eagles and the lions are playing a game in some serious snow in philadelphia.  if not for subtle hints like those, you wouldn’t know it is december around here.  this past week we’ve had some really “lucky you live hawaii” weather.  over all the temperatures have cooled down a bit but with light winds and a blazing (albeit winter) sun it still feels warm out there.  the fishing... forget about it.  it’s borderline ridiculous at most places around the island.  just as good if not even a hare better than it was this past summer.

got out twice this week.  i have been doing a lot of sight fishing lately so i was really jonesing for an honest to goodness full on two handed air raid.  so i took a few hours on wednesday to do just that.  i took out my sage 6126-4 one  and abel switch.  i recently got a hold of the new rio scandi 390gr head and was jacked to give that thing a try.  rio has come out with what they call connect core technology that is suppose to reduce stretch in their fly lines improving sensitivity.  as they put it, "soft, subtle takes become positive grabs, and without stretch to dull reaction times, hook sets are instant and sure."  i don’t know much about that, but i did notice that stripping that new head through the water did feel different.  like it was easier to strip which i guess makes sense if the line doesn’t stretch.  it did cast really nicely and turned over an eighteen foot mono leader and bombing fly with ease on all but the most “pilot error” of casts.

the bite must have really been on that day because i hooked a ton of fish in a few hours, actually more than i really care to.  most were cookie cutter rats but a few biggies in the mix as well.  being out on the water is always awesome to me.  that’s most of the reason why i fish.  catching fish, that was okay.  the best part of this day for me was that there was absolutely no one else around.  it is still possible to be alone on the water here on oahu though that is getting rare and usually occurs when the fishing is really poor.  that doesn’t bother me as i am more of a roll with the punches kind of guy (i also kind of like taking on the gods when the fishing is really bad).  the less and less it happens, though, the more i appreciate and enjoy those special days where it is just me, my tunes, and water.

friday it was back to sight fishing with doug.  it was another beautiful sunny day with very little clouds until the late afternoon.  sage 691-4 method was, not surprisingly, once again called to duty.  not having replaced my scientific angler saltwater textured line since its destruction last week, i lined my abel classic reel with the cortland classic 444 classic.

once again, there were lots of bones around and i hooked a bunch of them with that light set up while doug slaughterhoused.  a couple of fish that i hooked were shall we say a bit out of the realm of the six weight.  one of  these pigs actually knocked the clicker off of my reel sending it into complete free spool.  i fought that guy for as long as i could with the reel in total freespool.  it finally got the best of me and parted my leader on a reefy point that i was trying to keep it away from.  the funny thing was that my fly line survived the big fish that i hooked.  instead it was a small rat that ended up trying to make “radish roses” with my fly line.

i may have just happened to run into the two good days this week but i doubt that.  i’m not even close to that lucky.  i think there is just a lot of bones roaming around out there right now.  they probably didn’t get the memo that it is winter.  i won’t tell them if you won’t... i’ll see you on the water. bones away!

so the week kind of went like this...

all these bones around and blogging about it probably won’t help in the solitude on the water department but it should definitely add to the holiday good times for all.
