fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

crazy weather... slim pickin's.

just when you thought the worst was over...

the weather since the last blog has been less than stellar to say the least.  the god of crappy weather has sat on us for the past week bringing with him winds from the south, southwest, and every other direction but the right one.  fishing has been tough... at least for me.  i never liked kona wind days or days with a south wind and the worst has always been those rare times when the wind comes out of the southwest.  that is not to say that i won't fish it, but give me moderate to stiff trades and i’m a pretty happy dude.

i bombed hi kai on one of those pretty strong southwest wind days.  doug magically hooked a  bonefish.  there’s always a chance and i'm sure someone else went out somewhere and conked some fish, it just wasn't us.  i got a few trumpets and a nice weke (goat fish).  that was all she wrote.

i tried the scientific anglers skagit extreme intermediate head and monocore .030 intermediate shooting line.  i fished the 560gr. on the sage 7126-4 tcx (deathstar).  this is not the set up i like out at hi kai.  i prefer the lighter 6119-4 or 7119-4 tcx switches for my hi kai work, but i wanted to try the sci ang stuff so that’s what i did.  the skagit extreme intermediate head casted very nicely but it does sink and took some getting used to.  the head was fishing the fly a little too deep for the  situation, so i switched back to the rio skagit flight 550gr.  the intermediate head would be good for deeper water bombing situations and i have some big plans for it.  the shooting line was nice and shot well without too much tangles.  overall, very nice stuff and what we’ve all come to expect from sa over the years.

on sunday, i did a little horsing around with my buddy matt out on the lake.  i didn’t realize it, but it was the third sunday of the month and the hffa (hawaii freshwater fishing association) was having their little tournament thing so it was a packed house at the ramp.  i don’t know how the “lake pros” did (check out www.hawaiibassfishing.com for that), but i thought it was pretty tough fishing.  matt and i saw a total of two red devils both of which ran from matt’s well placed fly (scared devils).  i managed to squeeze out a couple of small peacocks with my “go to” g. loomis original glx 5wt., a rio camolux intermediate line, and a small crazy charlie (matt’s favorite lake fly).  i also caught three peacocks and a couple of cats (catfish) with medakas (mosquito fish).  matt caught a nice cat and a peacock as well. we got pounded by some showers and that’s pretty much all i have to say about that.

the good news is that as i am writing this the weather appears to be clearing and “they” are calling for our beloved island trade winds to be back by friday and through the weekend.  my advice?  you better get your cracks in while you can because another front is supposed to roll in on monday.  as trekkies and those who dig information society (i am the latter not the former) all know, “it’s worked so far but we’re not out yet".  i gotta go fish... i'll see you on the water.

this weeks little video:  clay and matt pound the lake.

peacock bass are always so cool looking.

matt-n-cat.

some like catching fish.  i just like to fish and i actually like tough fishing.  i just give the gods the finger and take whatever is thrown my way.  sometimes i win, sometimes i lose, but somehow it's always good times.

clay.
