fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

fishing the lake (sort of).

as eluded to in the last blog, i went up to the lake on friday with matt to see what all was going on up there.   this was the first time i fished the lake since january, can you believe that?  i gave matt a quick lesson on backing a boat down a ramp and the boy did quite well for his first time.  under my watchful eye, and with a couple of foreward straightening out maneuvers, matt dropped the boat in the water and we were off... well sort of.  i just put a new impeller in my outboard and apparently there were still bits of the old disintegrated one clogging the system leaving us with only the trolling motor.  oh well, sometimes like that.  i asked matt if he ever heard me say, “you gotta play the hand you’re dealt”?  he said, “all the time.” and with that, away we crept powered by minn kota.  this actually turned out to be a good thing as we fished areas of the lake that i haven’t fished in a long time and fished them thoroughly.  at trolling motor speeds... we had to.

i fished two rods, the sage 590-4 one and the g loomis 1085-4 nrx five weights.  we sight fished a bunch of red devils.  after a tough red devilin’ winter, it was refreshing to see devils out in force and being devils again.  we didn’t see any peacocks (peacock bass) spawning, maybe a little too late for that.  we did catch some that looked like they had recently finished their business and were getting back to the business of being tucs.  in the afternoon we took a break from fly fishing and fished medacca (mosquito fish), that matt brought, with spinning gear.  we had a blast fooling around with bait.  we caught a few more peacocks and a ton of cats (catfish).  we used up the bait and headed back to the boat ramp.  on the way back, we got into more devils (even doubled up a couple of times) and matt caught his first catfish on a fly that bit while he was casting to a red devil.

all in all just another fun day with light fly rods (love “trout size” fly rods).  it was good to finally get back on the lake i love and the lady of the lake welcomed her prodigal son back with open arms.  i can’t really report on the fishing beyond trolling motor range, but i think it’s safe to say that the lake is in summer mode and fishing well.  if i can find that clog and clear it out, i’ll definately be out there again this week.  i’ll see you on the water.

the day started off with this very ambitious cichlid that ate matts pink crazy charlie.

then we got into some devils...

and more devils.

sight fising red devils is one of my favorite things to do on the lake.  since these guys showed up, there is rarely a dull moment out there.

fish the devils and let the tucs come to you... and they usually do!

a time to "cat".

three amigos.

we doubled up with matt catching a channel cat (right) while i caught a chinese cat (left).

once rampant in the lake, the chinese cat is less common these days.  this is the first one i've run into in years (though i don't really ever fish for catfish).  we call it puntat.  i'm not sure where that name comes from, that's just what i've known this fish as since i was a kid.

matt with yet another lake cat.

a fly fished channel cat and "moldy" devil double.  you do tend to run into catfish on the fly more often when the lake is low... which it is right now.

double devils... a great way to end a great day.

i found some recent video clips that i either forgot about or took without knowing.  so here they are.  raw and uncut.

a sage 590-4 one rod, an old hardy marquis #5, and a lake.  integral parts of good times.

clay.
