bonefishing hawaii:

the lost week.

first some administrative stuff.  if you haven’t already heard, the shop will be closed this wednesday, november 13th.  yes we probably are going fishing, but no, that is not why we will be closed.  the hawaiian electric company for some reason thought that it would be a good idea to shut off the power to the businesses in our area all day on wednesday. i guess they figured that businesses aren’t usually open in the day time on wednesdays.  hey thanks heco for thinking of us.  anyway it is what it is and like so many other things in life… deal with it.

this past week was one of those weeks that totally goes against my whole “live like there’s no tomorrow” philosophy.  i didn’t do a whole lot to better my situation or improve the state of man kind… didn’t do much of anything to be honest.  i just kind of let the week slip on by.  i did fish twice (sort of) and watched my ducks get man handled by stanford yet again.

i took the sage 691-4 method out for the second time.  i was really impressed by the rod the first time i used it, but first impressions can be deceiving so i gave it a rest then brought it back out again on wednesday.  this time i lined it with a cortland 444 classic peach line.  this line has been around forever and is a really good line.  i used this line because of its time tested weight forward taper and because I hadn’t fished this line in years, so why not.  second impression… this freakin’ rod is really gooood.  in the words of ferris bueller,"it is so choice.  if you have the means, i highly recommend picking one up."

there were a bunch of other guys already fishing the flat when i got out on the water, so the fish i encountered were all in that heightened alert stage and really hard to get a fly to without spooking them.  that’s a pretty common occurrence these days, especially for me.  when you are a fish late kind of guy, you often find yourself in the “last man on the water” position… but that’s the game and you just gotta play the hand you’re dealt.  the weather has also been a bit funky lately.  south winds and the unstable weather, cloudiness and afternoon showers that it often brings made for more challenging but not impossible sight fishing conditions.  i did manage to hook one little rat before the tide bottomed out and the flat went dead.

then on friday i didn’t really feel like fishing but i went anyway.  i took out my g loomis classic glx 6wt. and the cortland peach line to compare the 691-4 method to (at least my) gold standard.  there were some other guys out again.  they were not fishing the same area as i was but they could have fished it before i got there.  i walked around for a little while and saw quite a few more fish out than on wednesday though the glare was pretty bad.  i took a few half hearted shots at fish and quickly realized, “i don’t want to do this”.  just didn’t feel like doing it.  so i threw some long casts to “play” with the rod, then went home and watched the oregon mens basketball team beat georgetown in the armed forces challenge.  as for the rod comparison verdict?  well i think that needs more time.  i can’t make a fair comparison yet as i have only fished the method twice now and i’ve been fishing g loomis glx’s for like a bazillion years.  suffice to say they are both f_in’ good casting rods.

so that's it.  i’m not exactly sure what happened this week.  maybe it was residual grogginess from dashed hopes of a bcs championship, the winterish weather, or i just needed to take a break from the pound.  this past week i just wasn’t really into it you know.  i guess all i can say is sometimes like that.  i’ll see you on the water.

on wednesday, my buddy jay rolled up on me.  he had only been out for a little while, caught one fish, and was already heading home.  i guess sometimes that’s all it takes for good times.  let’s go home!

clay.
