fly fishing hawaii and beyond:

a little hawaiian surf and turf.

first of all, i got a couple of checkins from friends across the seas.  lost brian’s been away doing some work way out in north carolina or somewhere way out there.  he apparently has been finding a little time to wet a line for some carolina bluegills.  a little closer to home spey fly girl thuy sent me a pic from an epic labor day steel trip to the deschutes in oregon.

meanwhile back on the home front, i spent an extremely rare day on the water horsing around with sean.  the past couple times out on the water i’ve kind of been chasing cudas (barracuda) with mediocre success.  sean and nankos mike have been spanking them pretty good out at k bay, so we decided to give that a go.  i fished my 5wt. g loomis nrx and abel creek 2 reel and sean fished his sage 589-4 xi3 and abel super 5n.  we fished small bangers and edgewater poppers.  the cudas did not disappoint exploding on our poppers with the reckless abandon that makes cuda fishing so much fun.  we took turns getting savage strikes from good size (well good size for oahu) cudas.  we both got about a half dozen strikes and landed several before deciding that we had caught (and smelt) enough.  we had only fished about an hour and it was still noon.  it was way to early to quit fishing so we decided to get some lunch, hook up the boat and head up to the lake with the same rod set ups to see what was what.  we got out there and i quickly realized that there was not much going on.  the afternoon bite just wasn’t happening (the lady of the lake is a fickle woman and sometimes it’s just like that).  we pounded the shoreline without even a chase.  we ended the day sight fishing red devils, which recently has also been a tough critter to come by.  sean and i scoured the shoreline, made our shots count and managed a couple nice ones (maybe state records).  a little hawaiian surf and turf of sorts and a super fun day with the boy jus’ futtin’ around (fooling around).

later in the week (wednesday) i went out in the afternoon to ke’ehi to practice a little skagit casting and get a “blog” bone and, hopefully, a papio (trevally).  i fished my sage 6119-4 tcx switch rod with a j. ryall 10 .  the j ryall reel may be a little old school, but they’re stll around and still make a great reel.  i like them alot.  i fished a rio skagit short 375gr and a ten foot intermediate tip.  the 6119-4 tcx switch is a little light for what i like out at ke’ehi but i still had “cuda” on the brain and fished for them for a while but they weren’t around.  the winds were coming out of the south southwest which, to me, means tough fishing around here.  i powered through the high tide and onshore roughness and got no papios.  i did manage to get some bones.  more than i expected under the conditions but like i always say you'll never know unless you go.

despite all the hype about bonefish being spooky and hard to catch, i gotta say, they are still the easiest fish to get on a fly regularly around here.  that may be more of an indicator of the poor condition of the inshore fishery around oahu, than how easily bonefish can be caught on the fly here, but whatever.  there are enough of them around that it doesn't take all that much skill to catch them, you just gotta go out and fish for them.  i guess we should be thankful that at least we have that.  hopefully everybody will take care of it and it will last. anyway, that’s pretty much what happened this past week and that is all i have to say about that.
