oh so fun fly fishing hawaii:

a whole lotta lakin' going on.

so the word on the street is that the summer bonefish blitz of 2013 is still going strong.  i got  good reports from both the nwff crew as well as a number of other happy anglers.  the only thing that may throw a bit of a monkey wrench into the bonanza this coming week may be the big tide bump moving toward the middle of the day.  it should still be as good as it gets around here in the morning and afternoon so don't let the opportunity to get on fish pass you by.  i didn’t go after bones this past week opting to fish the lake instead.  the lake, by the way, has also been fishing great.  that's pretty much summer in hawaii my friends.

on friday matt and i went out for a quick “one last blast” before he returned to college.  i fished my sweet little bamboo 4wt. and a g loomis nrx 5wt. the devil sight fishing was a little on the slow side.  lots of “scared” devils and “nonchalant” devils.  there were enough to keep it interesting and we caught some of those.  the fish weren’t busting bait on the surface.  they may have been in the morning but if you follow this blog, you know that i know nothing about anything that happens in the morning.  over the years my motto has become that you try to be the best fisherman you can so you don’t have to go early in the morning.  anyway, we fished devils then came across some “good wood”.  there is tons of wood structure that can hold fish around the lake.  the “good wood” is the one that is holding a lot of fish.  the catch is that the “good wood” is sometimes not easy to find.  for one thing it is not always the same wood.  i’ve had great days fishing many different woods around the lake and the ones i haven’t had good days on yet, i’m sure someone else has.  also the “good wood” may be holding a ton of fish (especially peacocks) that may just be “off” at the time you fish it making it seem barren.  so there is an element of luck when it comes to finding “good wood”.  when the lady of the lake decides to show it to you, though, it can be some of the best fishing the lake has to offer.  that’s exactly what matt and i got into.

matt had lost a number of his flies and was running low so i gave him this fly i call the micro fish.  the micro fish is a fly that i modeled after the hula shrimp that was designed by lanai’s own terry baird for bonefish.  i tied the micro fish as a fast sinking lake version of the hula shrimp.  matt liked it and so did the peacock bass.  we caught a ton of them around the “good wood”.  matt eventually lost my micro fish fly and craig lost my other one so i have no good pics of the fly, but we do have some in the shop if you want to check it out.

yesterday i fished with craig.  click here “kabuto rod and more crazy lake action” to see how that all played out.

sean and the boyz took advantage of the good weather and bone bite on monday and thursday and reported good fishing on both days.

then on friday...

i got matt into some last blast "good wood" peacock bass fly fishing.

the micro fish and an ambitious little peacock.  the next gen ten pounder.

big fatties like the micro fish as well.

matt is back in college now studying hard with a few more fish memories.

if you haven't tried sight fishing red devils on the lake you are missing out on some great light tackle fly fishing.  one of my favorite things to fish for, these scrappy guys are super fun on light rods.

the lake standard g loomis nrx 5wt. doing what it does.  conking oinkers like this fatty.

bamboo bent... so smooth and sweet to cast and i swear when i hook fish on this rod i can feel every muscle in its body flex.  i love it.

absolute... good times.

clay.
