bonefishing hawaii:

bones, bones, bones... and steelhead flies?

i took a week off from fishing after my last blog.  the boyz all had stuff to do that week so i just cruised it as well and got other annoying little life thangs done.  this past week i got back to business as unusual.  i’ve been preparing for my upcoming trip back to o.  i've been tying a bunch of steelhead flies.  i also spent this past week walking the reefs here in wading boots.  wading boots may not seem like a big deal, but when you’re a born and raised local boy from hawaii (slippas and tabis) and your simms wading boots make up two of the three pairs of shoes you own, it is kind of a big deal.  so in an atempt to get used to those foot cinder blocks again, i’ve been putting up with the stiffness, heavyness, sore legs and feet and cramps.  hopefully it will be a little easier for me to stay upright on the deschutes in the coming weeks.

fished two days (with boots) this past week.  the first day i bombed my g loomis  8wt roaring river switch with a 510gr. airflo skagit switch, and rio’s new 10ft. intermediate tip  (thanks rio i needed that).  i fished an orange and tan steelhead bunny and marabou leech tied on a 25mm wadington shank (like i said, i’ve been tying steelhead flies).

i like to bomb big bright stuff and this is pretty big and pretty bright.

this summer has not turned out as spectacular as other summers or even as good as we thought (or hoped) it would be.  it’s been okay though and this day was the typical 2011 summer day.  there were some bones around but not a lot and we caught some of them (i caught the ones that thought they were steelhead).  nothing really to write home (or blog) about.

the second time out this week i sight fished with my new sage one 8wt.  this time i lined it up with a scientific anglers mastery series bonefish line (probably my favorite line for bonefish although i like a lot of them).  whenever i get a new rod i always have to test if the rod has the juj (or keep on fishing it until it gets the juj).  i already blogged about how great this rod is in a previous blog (clay's blog 08/05) so i knew it was good, but when i strung it up and made a few casts with it i still had to say wow!  seriously, these rods are the real deal and you owe it to yourself to check it out.  fortunately for me the “one” i got already had juj built in and i didn’t have to add it after market.  the day before this outing i happened to be tying some chenille body steelhead flies.  just a chenille body, oval tinsel rib, hackle collar, and a few strands of flash.  just for fun, i tied a tannish brown one and tied some brass eyes on the front and fished that.  again, i managed to get on bones (that thought they were steelhead) with that.

left steelhead.  right bonefish.

so that’s the report for now.  i don’t know what else to say about that.  as you can see my mind has not been that focussed on bonefish lately.  we are now officially into fall, although it still feels like summer, and there are fish out there to be caught by both bonefishers and wanna be metalheaders alike.  i’ll see you on the river... i mean water.

the "one" yoying in it's first "one".

some shtuff got on my camera lense and made for some interesting shots of me that day.

slowly cruising away after the release... how do bonefish look in the water?  like this.

is that a ghost?  no just a ghost of the flat.

the mystery orb and a "summer run" bonefish.  i wonder if this one was the a or b run.  as always, go ducks and good times.
