bonefishing hawaii:

going glass.

if you don’t know who tom morgan is you should read this article “unity with the universe”.

doug, craig, and i picked up tom morgan’s 8’6” 7wt. fiberglass blank a while back.  this is the rod that tom calls the “unity with the universe”.  a few months later our friend dean built up the blanks and this past wednesday doug and i took this legendary rod out on the water.  it was also my first time back in the salt in quite a while.

i put an old scientific anglers system 9 reel on the rod.  it was okay but could have used a reel with just a touch more weight to balance it out perfectly.  i lined it with a scientific anglers gpx 7wt. fly line.

to say this rod casts beautifully would be the understatement of all time.  it was as close to pure perfection as i have experienced in a long time, incredibly easy loading, accurate, and laid out the most delicate presentations.

there were quite a bit of fish on the flat on wednesday, but for whatever reason they were just not that bitey.  that did not concern me all that much because often times, especially these days of higher fishing pressure, the bones are just like that.  besides i was truly in unity with the universe.  i was running on autopilot, taking shot after shot at fish presenting themselves before me with the new fiberglass extension of my mind, arm, and soul.  overhead casts, roll casts, switch casts, spey casts, right hand, left hand, down wind, into the wind, it was more than an afternoon of fishing for bonefish, it was an experience.

of far lesser importance, i did hook a few fish despite the fish being overall very closed mouthed and skittish that afternoon.  i caught a small omilu, bluefin trevally, hooked a pretty decent size bone that gave the unity with the universe everything it could handle and a bit more before the hook just popped out.  then i got another one to eat before calling it a day.

little bluefin... big fun.

as far as fish fighting goes, the tom morgan unity with the universe 8’6” 7wt. does not have the yoying power that may  be desired when fishing more gnarly reef areas but it has enough to do battle with the best of them in most conditions faced here on the island.  besides, it was never intended to overpower and conquer, but rather to become a part of the entire natural world it exists in and bring the angler with it.  what it lacks in fish boosting power, however, it more than makes up for in casting pleasure.  those who know me know that i’ll take that anyday.  after making just a few casts, i joined the countless other tom morgan disciples who have experienced the magic that few others can provide.  the “unity with the universe” is what fly fishing is all about.  fish this rod and you will never forget that.  i’ll see you on the water.

ended the day with this chunky guy.

unity with the universe... good times.
