fly fishing hawaii:

the goings ons.

this past week brought back the hawaii weather we all know and love.  sun, trades, and some fish to boot.  who could ask for anything more.  there is still a bit of chill in the water and air (you mainland guys don’t laugh) but for the most part it was a pretty swank week weather wise.  i broke out the sage 890-4 one, abel switch reel, and scientific angler mastery bonefish line and spent an afternoon sight fishing with doug.  not a lot of fish around, but enough to keep us entertained.  not a hard thing to do when it involves sight fishing for doug or horsing around for me.  we took turns taking shots at fish.  we also did a little combat style sight fishing where we would both cast at the same group of fish.  doug somehow got his fish to eat, once again, right before the fish that was on my fly bit.

later in the week i spent some time with my sage 8119-4 tcx, abel switch reel, and a scandi head that i cut.  i did some experimental bombing with some new techniques and ideas that have been rattling around in my noggin.  whenever that happens, for me, there is only one way to scratch that itch.  go out and try it.  so i did.  the casting part was great and some things worked quite well (like a little swivel between the shooting head and running line that some spey guys are talking about).  other things like my skunk works leader system failed miserably and so far i have lost every fish i hooked on it.  oh well, back to the drawing board.  some things work and many more fail, but you gotta try.  i’m always trying new and different things.  besides being fun and keeping our limited fishery interesting, experimenting with new ideas is an integral part of developing your personal fishing style.  more on that later.  suffice to say that in this game the guy who says he’s got it... has got nothing at all.  i’ll see you on the water.

on monday sean tangled with the nasty needle.  aha (blue bone needle fish) are great on the fly but pretty tough to keep hooked.  this guy did not get away.

when it comes to experimenting, no one tops deano.  he let a few photos slip out of the palolo skunk works.

doug used his purple nautilus nz to best this fatty.  he hooked it mere seconds before my fish bit.  combat fishing at its finest.  that's okay though, the boy likes to catch fish sight fishing more than i do.  just look at that smile.

this football was short but thick.  it was shaped like a stripe bass.

what is a day on the water without some horse-ing around...

whether you are playing with aha or pulling streamers.  having the fish gods strenuously deny your latest ideas or combat fishing with a buddy.  it's all good and all good times.

clay.
