fly fishing hawaii:

the end of may as we know it.

it’s true, time flies when you’re having fun and now here we are at the end of may as we know it.  got the kbay check in from sean and the crew.  fished some boneys myself and after hooking a few, that strange feeling came over me and i heard that familiar voice in my head... “clay, nuff already”.  what’s a boy in love supposed to do?  so i took a couple of days off and spent them at the tying vise.  expression sessions of sorts, i tied a bunch of ridiculously absurd flies  rather than anything real useful.  just fooling around pushing materials, ideas, and techniques to their limit and then a little beyond.  sometimes doing this spawns some good ideas that develop into productive flies, but most of the time it’s just one of those time wasting things that break up the monotony of everyday life and keeps one from going over the edge.  by the time sunday rolled around, the itch to chuck a fly was back, but the thought of fishing the salt still didn’t excite me, so i called craig (mr. i’m jacked to fish anything anywhere) to see if he could fish.  he said he had stuff to do in the morning and i had stuff to do in the afternoon.  still, we decided to go give the lake a quick look just to see wassup.  in short... it was a great idea.  almost half the year is gone already and from what i’ve seen on the water, summer is upon us.  you only get so many days, so make sure you make them all count.  until the next time...

nankos mike spent a day on the bay and yoyed up a couple of nice bones.

the release shot.

lost brian shows some attitude with this sweet omilu (bluefin trevally).

sean reminds us that the giant needle (aha), is always within the realm of possibility.

since fishing with nick and chucking his 12ft 6in. tfo pro a couple of times, i had the jones to fish that rod.  so i borrowed craig's.

for some cosmic reason, all of craig’s stuff has major juj.  everytime i use one of craig's rods, i catch fish.  it makes me wonder why i even buy rods for myself... i should just use his.

so we go to the lake and craig decides he is only going to fish flies he got from the dollar box at the shop.  the lady of the lake likes craig and this day was no different.  he immediately starts cracking fish starting with this devil...

then this tuc (peacock bass)...

and then this largemouth.  he even got a bluegill.

craig got the lake grand slam plus one in the time it took me to catch one red devil.

undaunted, our super hero pressed on with his faithful side kick the 5wt. loomis nrx and got this bass(tard).

a little later the peacocks began balling and busting shad.  not a ridicubust but enough that if you were “johnny on the spot” as i call it and could deliver the fly into the sporadic  fracas quick enough, you’d be in the game.  we caught a bunch of peacocks as well as a few doubles.

the nrx performed like a champ... craig, i think mine is bigger.

before we knew it, i had to bail.  i caught this one last little guy and started breaking down my gear and waited for craig (who had just switched to his spinner and some kind of rattle bait).

craig got this last bass and we were outy.  as we left the fish were still in full busting mode.  not all rods got bit (we set that bar high by bringing so much crap). we did keep up our streak of both of us slamming on the lake.

good fishermen, good friends, good fun, all integral parts of good times.

clay.
