more oh so fun fly fishing hawaii:

kabuto glass and more crazy lake action.

craig wanted to fish yesterday and we were thinking about going after bonefish but he mentioned that he had just received his kabuto fiberglass 8’ 5wt rod from japan.  when i heard that i knew there would be no bonefishing for clay this week.  kabuto has about a year waitlist to get a rod.  i really wanted to give that stick a fish and it just so happened that i knew a good little chunk of fallen trees to fish it on.  so it was once more into the fracus.  i wanted to fish my bamboo rod again but it had such a workout the day before i replaced it with my sage txl 7’10” 3wt.  the txl is the predecessor of the current sage txl-f and a great little rod for sight fishing red devils.  i also  brought my 5wt. g loomis nrx again because it was already out from the day before and it is one of my favorite all around lake rods.

we got out on the lake and the kabuto rod was just breathtaking.  i have never seen anything like it.  the rod just glowed like a light saber in the sunlight.  i took craig to the “good wood” i had found the day before.  the wood turned out to be not so good on this day.  we pounded it for a while and didn’t catch or see anything.  we left the area and sight fished devils for a while then something told me (my spidey sense) to go check out the good wood again.  as we neared it we saw our friend jesse fishing his way toward it.  i stayed away and just watched him fish it.  he fished through and didn’t get any bites.  i told him about what we had caught there the day before and he headed off to check out some other areas.  we decided to give it one more try anyway and wouldn’t you know it, there they were.  craig hooked a nice tuc that doubled over the kabuto rod.  the bite was on.  i always jokingly say that it is not a good day on the lake unless all the rods you bring get bit.  that was no problem on this day as craig and i slaughterhoused tucs.  i got to fish the kabuto glass which, as expected, casted beautifully and was a pretty amazing piece of craftsmanship… fishing it, though, was probably a six hundred dollar, one year wait mistake for me.  oh well, such is the life of a fly fishing addict.  i’ll see you on the water.

craig got the stink off his kabuto rod with this bleug.  he ended up catching three bluegills with the rod.

the kabuto rod in action.

the nice peacock on the kabuto glass that started the carnage.

craig also caught a bunch of fish with his sage bass rod and this fly abomination creature that he let crawl off of his vice.

jesse getting in on the action.

putting more notches in the ole nrx.  it is an absolute peacock slayer.

and, of course, my beloved devils.

then it was my turn give the kabuto a chuck.

and aside from the reel handle being on the wrong side (inside joke with my left handed winding friends) the rod looked, casted, and fished amazingly.

i don't know if i believe in love at first sight but the kabuto rod came awfully close.  good times.

clay.
