fly fishng hawaii:

tucs, tucs, tucs.

i took matt out for some "fun" higher education on fly fishing and fishing the lake before the boy's "real" education kicks in again.  it went a little something like this...

lesson 1: let's start off easy.  peacock bass, "peacocks", tucunare, or "tucs" are uber fun chunks on the fly.

lesson 2: all u need is a 4-6 wt. set up.  hint: a 4wt. g. loomis classic glx, abel tr1, rio aqualux line, and assorted small baitfish streamers is an excellent set up.

lesson 3: tucs are probably the most moody fish i've ever encountered.  when they are "off"  they are off.  when they are "on", it can be borderline ridiculous and doubles are common.

lesson 4: "lipping" is the art of landing a fish by grabbing it by the lower jaw.  widely used by professional bass fishermen world wide, it also works well to land tucs.

lesson 5: peacocks are some of the most beautiful fish around.  the lake, on the other hand, is beautiful in it's own way.  despite homeless camps, a sewage plant, and those who treat it like a landfill.  it is what it is and (fortunately) it is what we have.

lesson 6: i divide peacocks into two categories "spawners" and "eaters".  spawners are the ones that bite when they are guarding their spawning nests.  eaters are those who bite because... well because they are eating.  many anglers like to go for spawning fish because they are super aggressive and generally larger.  for me, i'll take a small "eater" over a large "spawner" any day.

lesson 7: peacocks are strong and tough dog fighters.  this comes from their lifestyle of chasing bait around.  they are often found relating to shad schools, points, and "good wood".  of the many species of fish i've caught on a fly over the years, peacocks are among my favorites.

lesson 8: i don’t know sh_t about catching largemouth bass with baitcasters and crankbaits, but i do know a thing or two about horsing around and having fun.  apparently sometimes that’s all it takes for (you guessed it) good times.
