fly fishing hawaii:

from bones to peacocks, the hawaiian summer is here!

since the last check in i got my will to bone somewhat back and did a little sight fishing.  i also checked out the ridicuhigh lake (it's up to the 80ft. mark) a couple days with friends.  both of these fisheries seem to be going off pretty good as far as i could tell.   the skies have still been a bit sketch and not the normal june weather around here, unusually wet. there has been more sun as of late thanks to the strong summer trades that at least keep the clouds moving.  good news for those wanting to hunt bones with there eyeballs.  on the flipside the mountains have held the clouds pretty good which makes for happy peacocks and unhappy shad up at the lake.  so despite the odd weather we’re having so far this summer, the fish seem to be in summer mode.  if you haven’t been out there, now is the time to go.  it is prime time and there are definitely fish to be caught.  i was trying to squeeze in a sight fishing blog before i leave on my little hiatus back to the o.  unfortunately i couldn’t quite spit the words out that i wanted to and it is currently a work in progress (i.e. a big mess).  instead of letting good fish pics go stale, i decided to get this blog post in.  i have a freshness date on my blog pics and don’t use pictures in that are more than a week old.  you can find pictures of what was caught two weeks to ten years ago all over the internet.  so in the name of fresh pics here goes... i’ll get that sight fishing blog done and try to hook some fresh bones when i get back.  until then,  i gotta go chase some steel.

the crew took tippy's dad jimmy out with us and hooked him up with a bubble float and a fly.  jimmy knew exactly what to do with it and quickly conked this awa aua (ladyfish).  a definite sign of summer in hawaii.

doug gettin' the streak on.  lots of good size bones swimming around these days.

of course this guy somehow always manages to wrangle up a few of his own.

but it's not easy to beat the orange and tan charlie... with extra small lead eye of course right doug?

there's some great sight fishing in between clouds these days.  nothing to it but to go do it.

meanwhile over on the lake...

more used to ahi, aku, uku, paka and other deep water quarry, todd (tippy) used the magic gold kastmaster and caught his first largemouth bass.

later he took bubble and fly similar to the one his dad jimmy used and got his first peacock bass.  it's gotta be genetic.

the next day, sunday, i took new high school graduate matt out.  he spent a couple of days prior to our trip practicing his cast at the park and it paid off big time... right matt?

we even managed to double up a couple of times.

the fish busting on shad was pretty sporatic but there are tons of bass like this around...

as well as peacocks like this beauty.  the sage smallmouth rod, a popper, and a fast "johnny on the spot" cast, not the easiest way to catch the sporatic busting fish but the most satisfying for sure.

with all the action going on around here, i hate to leave... not!  until the next time... good times.

clay.
