bonefishing hawaii:

the all roy blog.

roy is one of the shops oldest customers.  not oldest like old man old (sorry roy) but he’s been coming in regularly pretty much from the start.  roy is one of the very few who remembers when i first opened the shop and no one came in for days, except for maybe deano.  back then my mother would often be in the shop while i was working another job.  she would just hang out there all day and tell anyone who happened to come in or call (which was extrememly few and far between) that she knew absolutely nothing about fly fishing and that i would call them back later.  back then no one cared or really knew anything about fly fishing except for the handful of guys i would occasionally fish with.

anyway through all those years, roy never got out on the water all that much, always having one life thing or another get in the way of fishing.  as a result he had never caught a bonefish.   the times he did fish he would be unsuccessful and a number of times he would watch as myself or others would catch fish (sometimes a lot of fish).  yet through it all he always kept a positive attitude and truly just enjoyed being out on the water.  he stops in frequently on his daily walks to listen to others tell their tales and theories and is always enjoyable to be around.  just a real good guy.

the other day he and doug went out to hi kai and wouldn’t you know it roy got bit!  according to doug they both witness the whole thing happen right down to the fish eating.  way cool.  when i heard the news i immediately thought that this momentous occasion, that has been ten years in the making, deserves its own blog.  i think anyone who has ever met roy over the years will agree with me when i say that this is by far the best bonefish ever caught on a fly rod in hawaii.  way to go roy!  the boyz are all super stoked!  now let's go get another one!

the days have been beautiful and the fish have been around in good numbers.  absolutely perfect conditions this week... just ask roy.

doug got photos of this historical event from start to finish... man i wish i was there.

c’mon roy wrassle that thang!

got’em.

i don’t care what any of us catch, maybe for the rest of our lives.  i think this fish will top them all.  next time you are having a hard time finding fish or getting bit think of roy and remember that there is sooooo much more to fly fishing than just catching fish.  just get out there and enjoy... good times.

clay.
