fly fishing hawaii:

surviving the winter.

nothing much new and exciting to report.  everyone’s just scraping out whatever fishing is going on.  i fished the lake twice and despite scattered reports of good fishing from folks who shall remain nameless (stan).  the two times i went up there were pretty tough by lake standards.  in defense of the nameless “wolf crier”, we did get into some pretty good busting fish on one of the days and although it was a sporadic bust (and as usual mostly busting “over there”) it was enough for me to see how if caught on the right days it could go off.  when you fish with the nwff crew, however, it can’t be anything but a good time because that’s just how we roll.

bonefishing has also been a somewhat “battleship” like experience, calling out coordinates trying to get that one or two bites.  according to deano the only place that is still hanging on to any kind of consistancy these days is hickam.

fished some pretty dead water out at hi kai yesterday.  we knew it was going to be tough but just had to scratch the itch to chuck a two handed rod as well as check out that side.  as usual the nwff crew made the day as deano showed up on his stand up paddle board.  always sacrificing fish to try the next great thing, deano hit upon a winner as he scoured the reef and was the only one out of four of us that found the fish.

the fish gods can be stubborn around this time of year but their is a way to conquer them... just be more stubborn.  i can’t wait to fish again this week.

"pops" and one of the few "sight fishing" devils.

we also sighted a rare shtanky aku (skipjack tuna) tailing in the shallow mud at the lake.

e.t. took a break from guiding to check out the lake full stealth camo style.

we got some little guys on a banger style popper i tied up the day before.  always fun to get cracks on top.

craig went down below and got his fix with a streamer and sinking line.

e.t. also got some red devils and even the classic fisherman's catch... a boot... only at lake wilson.

the grand slam and some new streamers that i've been working on worked well.

you never know what that deano will be up to next.  the father of two handed switch rods in hawaii, he's now taking it to a new level.

and it paid off on this tough day.

as for me... i just love the casting,

taking what i can get, and loving every minute of it.  good times.

clay.
