bonefishing hawaii:

just another day.

so after a pretty long hiatus of busy work (a little over a week, nine days to be exact) i finally got back to where i belong on friday.  light kona winds from the southeast.  not exactly conditions that i personally like but play the hand you're dealt right?  nothing really special or ground breaking about the day to report.  fishing started off slow but picked up considerably as the afternoon wore on and the tide came up.  i fished my beulah classic 5/6 switch, abel switch reel, beulah elixir 300gr. line, 16ft. mono leader (one of my favorite set ups if you haven’t already noticed).  just patiently waiting for the elusive hawaiian trevally or golden to come and say hello, while my bone brethren keep me company.  for some reason, fish were short striking the fly on this day.  they were just kind of picking at them like they sometimes  do.  i hooked a bone that just popped off (weed guard).  the next fish bent the hook out which told me that the hook didn’t penetrate all the way.  i also missed a number of quick bites.  i cut the weed guard on my fly a bit shorter and still missed a few more bites but managed to land a couple of boneys after making that game time adjustment.

in keeping with the theme of the last blog (different flies, bones will eat just about anything, blah, blah, blah), a couple of weeks ago i tied up a kind of string leach, moal (mother of all leaches) style of fly to try.  i used it and although it looked good and i knew it would work, it sank a little to slow for my liking.  doug showed some interest in it so i gave it  him.  he called it the fleximantis so i guess that’s what it is called.  i never got a chance to tie another one but doug used it on friday and surprise, surprise, caught fish with it.  who was it that said to have confidence in everything?

it felt great to be back in the water.  kind of like that first sip of a cold beer after not having had one in a long time.  i quit drinking altogether about ten years ago but i still remember how good that first sip tastes and i often think about how good it would taste the next time, if i ever do drink again.  anyway that's how good it was to fish.  like your life... love to fish.  i’ll see you on the water.

fridays short strikers.

bone with dangling "fleximantis".

as was said in the movie the matrix, "he's beginning to believe".

first day back on the water... first sip of beer... just like heaven.  good times.

clay.
