fly fishing hawaii and beyond:

this weeks rabble.

more of the same to report.  sunny but still very varying winter weather around here.  this week began with cloudy, chilly weather and ended in bright sun and howlin’ like a shaolin winds.  got into a bunch of chilled, what sean would call "unhappy" bones on wednesday afternoon and only managed to hook one.  as bones will do sometimes around here, the fish got the upper hand and ran into something sharp in the depths that sliced through my tippet like a razor blade.  doug fared a bit better hooking two and landing one of them.  he didn’t send me a picture so we’ll just have to take his word for it.

on thursday afternoon i did a little bombing with my sage 6126-4 z axis, abel spey reel, and airflo rage compact 390gr.  it was a mix of sun and clouds and the wind was fairly light.  i guess it was the calm before the big blow.  i met up with super guide e.t. and he informed me that there were fish around but they were not too bitey.  no surprise from what i had witnessed the day before.  ed had only caught one fish before i arrived on the scene.  i bombed around and got two “blog” fish, but it took a while.  it was pretty slow.  while i was bombing i saw quite a few bones cruising around.  i didn’t take shots at them because sight fishing with a 12ft. 6in. spey rod isn’t exactly fun to me.  seeing fish is usually a good indicator of good bombing... sometimes.  not on this day.  seeing those fish around, though, confirmed e.t.’s assessment of the day.  they were there, just not that eaty.  sometimes like that.  after hooking the second fish i decided that was enough and i left.  that’s pretty much all i have to say about that.  unfortunately, no great story to tell or secrets to reveal.  just another week in the life.  take care of the ocean, have fun out there, and i’ll see you on the water.

spey bro harold checked in with shiny steel in beautiful oregon.  nice fish and reel harold!

on monday, sean took his g loomis fr1027-4 8'6" 7wt. shorestalker out for a spin and got this chunk.

sage 6126-4 z axis and a little "blog" fish.

and a fatty...  if you look good, you can see he is holding a bonefish as well.  good times.
