bonefishing hawaii:

summer 2013 rolls on.

not a whole lot to say this week.  i only got out once this week on wednesday.  took my tfo 5/6 126 4 deer creek spey rod out for a chuck.  i like to fish this rod with a abel switch reel (or abel spey both are good on this rod) and a 385 grain rio steelhead scandi head.  a poly leader, tippet and a fly... done.  this time i used a clouser like fly i tie with a craft fur wing.  i like me my craft fur.

it was a little rough out there.  there was a big summer tide as we  approach the full moon on monday (tomorrow).  add to that a decent south swell and some stiff trades and you have the right conditions to take a pretty good lickin’ which i did.  despite getting pushed around pretty good, i was able to fire off bombs in between swells.  from what i saw and caught out there, i can say that the summer bite hasn’t let up at all and is still rolling right along in high gear.  lots of rats and the past couple times out the bigger boys have also reared their ugly head.  the 5/6 tfo spey rod is great fun to catch rats on (and why i like using lighter weight rods) but i caught about a seven pound fish that took every bit of graphite fiber in that rod to land in the tough deep conditions i was fishing...  and that’s about all i have to say about that.  i’ll see you on the water.

buds craig and eric checked in with this omilu beast they caught "hawaiian style" on their friend's outrigger sailing canoe.  nice.

still plenty of good fun summer rats running around out there.

the tfo 12ft. 6in. 5/6 deer creek spey rod.

summer cookie cutter rats are usually willing to play and are quite spunky little creatures.  that's why i like them.

bent.

fat head.

summer 2013 is rolling right along.  make sure you get out there and partake in the good times.
