fly fishing and really not so fly fishing hawaii:

three days on the lake.

"small kine" computer problems.  my computer of eight or so years decided to check out from this world for good and i had to get a new one.  now i’m just struggling through new versions of operating systems, software, and stuff i know little to nothing about.  it appears that quite a bit has changed in eight years… what's that they say about old dogs and tricks?

it always seems to me that for some reason people tend to all want to fish at the same time.  i’ll go weeks or months fishing casually once or twice a week.  no schedules or plans, just waking up and going if you want or not going if you don’t.  just the way i like it.  then all of a sudden one person will call, then another, and another, and before you know it, you’re on the water for days straight.  this past week was one of those weeks.  in addition to a “normal” fish on wednesday, i ended up fishing the lake for the next three days.  i fished thursday with my nephews bennet and dennen.  dennen is leaving for college on the east coast this week so “the boyz” had to get one more fish in before that.  matt who is also returning to college soon also wanted to fish the lake so we went out on friday.  then craig called and wanted to fish on saturday.  craig ended up flaking but i had kept some live bait for him.   not knowing what else to do with the bait, doug (and his new ultralight spinner) and i went out on saturday to use up the bait as well as do a little fly rod devilin’.  add to that fly tying and an i.t. moron with a new computer and you have one pretty beat down old dude.

the silver lining in all of this is that the fishing around here has been off the charts.  i am happy to report that there are lots of bones at all places around the island and the lake has been going nuts with fish busting shad in the mornings as well as the afternoon (if you are lucky enough to get some cloud cover).  i got stuck doing more bait fishing than i normally care to do this week but i did get my fly shots in.  besides, in my book, bait fishing is still fishing and fishing is better than not fishing.   i’ll see you on the water.

bennet took us out to get the lake thang started on thursday.

and it didn't take him long to get the stink off.

then dennen got his fish groove on.

the boys pounded a ton of fish that day.

including numerous doubles.  my nephews can pretty much fish on their own so i just caught one peacock then just sat back and watched the carnage unfold.  i took pictures and helped unhook really stuck hooks...

and took an occasional shot at busting fish with a kastmaster.

chunks like this were crashing shad balls off and on all day long.  as usual with busting fish all you had to do was be what i call "johnny on the spot" to get bit.

it was just one of those magical lake days.  i'm so glad it happened for the three amigos last blast.  at least for a while.

the next day it was more of the same.

this time with matt.

matt caught this massive black devil.  it was the biggest one that i have seen come up yet.

we did do some actual fly fishing as well.  i sight fished devils with my 590-4 sage one and islander ir 3 reel.

matt's pink charlie and five barred general.

craig left me holding the bait on day three, so i got doug to come out and help me use up the bait i had saved to fish with craig.  the lady of the lake had something to say about that though and completely shut the bite off.  we tried hard but couldn't buy a fish with bait.  i couldn't believe it.

fortunately the dropping water level exposed more devils and the sight fishing was pretty good.

i used my g loomis classic glx 5wt. and islander ir3 reel.  perfect for the lake, devils, and bleugs.

needless to say we didn't use up the bait.  so right before we left doug and i put one more bait on and i dumped the rest in the water.  wouldn't you know it we doubled up.  of all the tucs caught on bait this week, these two were by far the best.

don't forget, there are also bones all around out there.  if you are into that sort of thing.  jay, doug, and i hooked a bunch of them on wednesday and i've heard numerous reports of "catching" from other buddies island wide.

summer is slowly but surely passing by, but there is still time left to get in on the good times.

clay.
