bonefishing hawaii:

birthday fish and video fun.

forty two years and my life is still, trying to get up that great big hill of hope, for a destination.  yeah, those 4 non blondes had it right.  i’ve been singing that tune since i was twenty five.  now here i am a lot older, but the wiser part got lost somewhere along the way.  fished a few days ago on my b-day.  took the g loomis 12' 6" roaring river stinger out for a spin.  lined it with both an airflo skagit compact 480 gr. and a rio skagit flight 475gr.  both heads work well, but i think i prefer the flight a shade better with the stinger.  the winter remains a tricky nut to crack.  the bones have become the fish of a thousand casts for bombers and the fish of a thousand presentations for sight fishers.  the weather has cleared up a bit but it is still cold and windy.  for those who enjoy the challenging and (rare) solitude parts of fly fishing like i do, now is prime time.  i’ve , personally, loved every minute of it and hope that there is more of this hawaiian winterness to come.  there are definitely fish up on and around the flats all around the island but it ain’t easy fishin’.  many of the relatively new comers to hawaii fly fishing are scratching their heads as they experience their first “tough” winter.  the old timers (and really old timers) to this island fly fishing scene were more surprised by how good the past two or three winters have been.  perhaps this is a sign that a gangbusters summer is on the way (the past few have not been that great).  as the band asia once put it so well, “only time will tell”.

on another note i got this pocket camcorder for my b-day from my bro (his family always seems to know just what to get for the guy that has absolutely nothing).  i took the camcorder out with my sage 8119-4 tcx switch rod lined with a rio skagit short 475 gr.  (another sweet harbor bomber set up ).  i hooked a barred jack and tried to get it on video while i fought it.  that, my friends, is not an easy task and the fish ended up shaking the fly (they’re pretty good at doing that).  oh well, sometimes like that.  later i spent a little time looking for a tako (octopus) to make popcorn tako on christmas day.  i took some video of that too and after much, much, much problems i was able to get the two videos i took up on the web.  somehow it is not as easy, or fun, as fly fishing is.  a word of warning, the two videos totally suck... those who know me would expect nothing less.  take a look if you want, you’ve already been warned.  right now, i've gotta spin up a new fly or two and get back out there.  i’ll see you on the water.

and catch the ray of sunlight that will shine down on you every once in a while.

and although i am usually in a constant battle with the gods... they did call a truce and cut me some slack on my birthday.  happy holidays everyone and, as always, good times.
