fly fishing and not so fly fishing hawaii:

summer fun hawaiian style.

i know it is not summer yet but this week sure felt like it.  trades from the north east at fifteen to twenty mph., some scattered trade wind showers, a nice sized south swell, it is hawaii at it’s best.  it reminds me of so many summers growing up when summer break was just the absolute end all be all of life itself.  south winds this weekend (again) remind us that we are not quite there yet, but it's getting close.

the fishing also feels like summer.  i was only planning to fish once this past week but last minute plan changes found doug and i going head to head again with spinning gear.  this time doug put on quite a show and started womping fish right off the bat.  i think he caught like six barracuda and an omilu (bluefin trevally) before i even got bit.  in my defense i was fooling around with some stupid bass lures that i sometimes use on the lake but when i switched to my “secret” lure i got ala alas (nothing) on it either... sometimes like that.  but, fishing is a sport of persistence and patience, two things that i, fortunately, am blessed with a lot of.  having a rod with the super juj also helps and i, and the rod, worked our way back into the mix as the day wore on.  in the end it took trying a new lure to come close to doug.

then it was back to the serious business of fly fishing or at least as serious as it gets with us jokers (which is not all that serious).  the day turned out to be tougher than it has been in a while.  at least for me.  less fish and the fish we did see were pretty spooky.  again, sometimes like that.  aside from a few slim pickin’s bonefish,  the 2013 pa’opa’o (golden trevally) master doug somehow sight fished another one of these great creatures.  look out, the boy’s on golden fire.  the weather is great and getting better.  the days are getting longer.  the fishing is good.  no better time to get out and be one with the ocean.  i’ll see you on the water.

everybody's pal sean.  starting off his summer season with a crease fly cuda and a bone in the bush.  is that worth two on the flat?

big island jimmy checked in with his first bone from the black sands of the bigs.  right on jimmy... that's how it all starts.

doug womping some cudas and omilu (bluefin trevally).

even when i finally got my first one he was hooked up as well.

but the magic spinning rod and the man of much (fishing) patience remained undaunted.  for they both knew that sometimes like that.

and sure enough...

just as the last time we ended the day with a double... let's go home!

golden boy with his second pa'opa'o of 2013 both sight fished.  not an easy thing with these guys but i guess when the gods deem it your turn... what can you do?  doug has certainly paid his "pounding" dues.

the pursuit of fish... sometimes easy, sometimes hard.  always good times.

clay.
